I Don’t Burn Candles

“I don’t burn candles in the summer” is one of the most often things we hear at outdoor craft shows this time of year. It’s pretty common for most not to want that “warm” feeling you get from a candle when it’s hot as heck outside.

Decorated Candles

Decorated CandlesWe’ve been a bit sneaky.

Last week the large 16oz “fish bowls” decorated candles were added to the site, and we didn’t announce it. Not on the blog and not in the newsletter. Oops!

What makes these decorated candles unique is they are decorated by scent. The candle pictured is in Caribbean Morning scent. You’ll see it’s decorated with “tropical” butterflies in an orange theme.

A few months back, my grandparents had their 60th wedding anniversary. As a gift, we donated several of these jars to be placed on the tables. All were in floral scents to hopefully please the masses. Each decorated with floral designs and pastel colors. They looked absolutely beautiful!

So anyway, the 16oz “Fish Bowl” jars are now available. The 8oz faceted jars were also released today. These are also decorated candles based on scent choice. Very fun gifts!

New Year’s Eve Baking

We had an absolutely wonderful New Year’s Eve. Several friends came over, and the kids all had a great time.

I decided to burn my Sweet Orange & Chili Pepper Teddy Bear Jar that night, because it seems everyone loves that scent, including one friend who I knew was coming over. She commented on it when she walked in the door.
That same friend decided to bring over goodies to bake for everyone, and I didn’t blow out the candle while baking. Much to my surprise, it complimented the smell of baked goodies in the oven absolutely perfect. The scent just blended right in with the oatmeal bread, pumpkin bars, apple cake, and chocolate cherry cake.

It’s nice to find those scents which complement other normal scents already in my home. :)

Does that really smell like Coke?

If you’ve seen our scent “Coca Cola”, I’m sure you’ve asked yourself “Does that REALLY smell like Coke??”. Well let me put that question to rest - yes, it really does smell like Coke. The general reaction at craft shows when they smell the coca-cola scent is “WOW!”. Many can’t get over how much it really DOES smell like it says.

The other question that’s been asked on this particular scent, is “does it make you want to drink it?” That I can’t really answer. It doesn’t make ME want to drink it, but I think it could have a different effect on others.

Finally the other question that may be on your mind…..how does it smell burning? Answer - absolutely wonderful. This is one of my favorite “any time” scents that I throw in the melt warmer often. It’s got a nice “clean” scent to it, believe it or not.

There you have it - the mysteries behind the ever so unique scent “Coca Cola” answered. :)

With a little help from our friends…

On November 3rd, we’re scheduled to be at Newton DMACC for the “Girl’s Night Out” event. Although right after we reserved our space, it was announced my grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary would be on the same day and at the same time. There was no way to attend both the show and the party, so we were ready to cancel. After all, a 60th anniversary is pretty important.

Just as we were about to cancel, we came up with the idea to ask a friend to sit at the table for us. We’ll set up before, and come back to tear down. No problem! She agreed, and I can’t tell you how good it feels to have a friend as great as her. There’s noone in the world I would trust more to run our business when we can’t, and she definately knows the products. Just in case though, I’ve given her a list of some common questions. I have complete faith in her, and know she’ll do just fine.

So if you are in central Iowa and plan to be at this show in November, make sure you stop by and say hello to one of our dearest family friends. Also do be sure to go easy on her, this will be her first time at a craft show. ;)

Advertureland Craft Show this Weekend

This weekend we’ll be attending the Advertureland craft show in Altoona, Iowa. We’ve been at this show before, tucked away in the hallway last spring. Even though this craft show has been going for years and we attended last spring, this will be our first October show at this particular place. We are really hoping for a great turn out and strong sales!

We know from experience there are several other candle makers attending this show. What makes us different? We don’t use dyes. Many of our customers have told us they think it’s wonderful we don’t use dyes in our candles, and have made several purchases. On the other hand though, there have been other customers who question it. We realise there is a market for both colored candles and candles without dyes, which is why seeing ‘competition’ doesn’t bother us in the least.

If you are in central Iowa and love craft shows, you are more than likely to see us within the next few weeks. This weekend is Adventureland, next week is Mingo. November we are completely booked every weekend. In November, we’ll start with “Girl’s Night Out” at DMACC in Newton. Next will be Pella High School in Pella, followed by Four Mile Elementary (my old elementary school, just outside of Pleasanthill). Finally we’ll end our shows in November on Thanksgiving weekend at Adventureland again.

Planning to be at one of these shows and want something specific? Let us know and we’ll be sure to have it on hand. You can pick it up at the show! See all our candles at:

My New Melt Warmer

I’ve been burning melts for some time now. I love how easy they are, and how well they throw scent. My melt warmer was one I had bought long befor we started selling candles. It did it’s job, but ever since we latched on to our irridescent warmers, I’ve been itching to grab one for myself.

My mother and I decided this would make a perfect birthday gift. I have been waiting for several months now, and I’m so excited to finally have it! Of course I had to break it in immediately, throwing a French Market scented melt into the warmer. Wonderful!

Now that I’ve latched on to one of the last of our melt warmers, I think it’s time for us to order more. I know there were a few wanting a specific color which were sold almost immediately. Those will most likely be the main item we keep in stock. Aside from that, I’m really not sure yet what we will be getting. I do know they will make perfect Christmas (or in my case, birthday) gifts!

What’s in the Melt Warmer Today?

I absolutely love my melt warmer. I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again - I LOVE IT! More often than not, you’ll find my melt warmer on instead of me burning candles. I can’t help it, it’s just so easy and throws such a good scent!

Today in my melt warmer is Citrus Cooler. My mom says this scent smells like Sprite to her, but I say Margarita. We were told at our Baxter craft show it smelled like Lime-aid, which was a fond childhood memory so she bought the candle. I’m just fond of Margaritas, so I’m sure that’s why I like the scent (haha).

Even though I’ve got an abundance of Best Friends right now, Citrus Cooler just seemed like the right scent for the day. It’s a nice “summer-like” scent.

Prairie Days Town Celebration & Craft Show

Prairie Days is this weekend, and I’m really looking forward to it. Not only do we have a craft table, but the kids always enjoy the activities which go on all weekend. Last year we took turns sitting at the table, while the other takes the kids around to the rides and games.

I’ve also got someone of a tradition when it comes to events like this. I MUST have a corn dog, no matter what. I don’t know why, but it’s a must. Use to be the only place you could get a corn dog was at the state fair or at big events. Now they sell them in the store, but it’s just not the same. I’ve got to have my corn dog served fresh and made right in front of me.

Enough about foods though. The partner (my mother) is busy pouring candles and getting ready for Friday and Saturday. She’s made sure to have our most popular scents on hand. This includes French Vanilla Coffee, Country Home, Vanilla, Cinnamon Sticks, Best Friends, Hummingbird, and several others. Most of the time we just never know what’s going to sell, and it’s often a surprise. Even still, some scents still sell better than others.

If you are in the central Iowa area, come on down to Prairie City and see us! We’ll be right on the square with the other crafters, and free smells are always available. :)
